MR Noise is a broadband noise reduction processor. It distinguishes itself by being both great sounding and incredibly easy to use. Like most noise reduction systems, MR noise works in the frequency domain, and requires that the noise spectrum be learned before noise reduction can commence. If your track starts with a bit of silence then MR Noise will work right out of the box, since by default MR Noise has the Learn parameter enabled, then when you hit play, MR Noise will learn the noise profile and start noise reduction. The default parameters work extremely well for most cases. One of our reviewers thought something was wrong because they opened up MR Noise and the noise vanished - and they didn't have to do anything.

When designing MR Noise, we spent considerable effort researching and experimenting with existing noise reduction algorithms. MR Noise combines the best of these with some new innovations, especially our Auto Dynamics mode. This mode automatically adjusts the attack and release times of the noise reduction processor based upon the amount of transients in the input signal. This minimizes artifacts in the noise reduction processing while maintaining sharp transients that would normally be smeared by other methods.

The user interface makes it a snap to see and hear what is going on. The frequency response display shows the spectrum of the input signal, noise floor, and output signal so you can see at a glance what frequencies are being reduced. A monitor feature allows you to hear the noise that is being removed (with separate volume control). For most cases you simply have to select a preset and hit play, MR Noise will learn the floor and start reduction. Then you can simply adjust the Amount control to set the amount of reduction. For super fine tweaking, the noise floor and all the reduction parameters can be edited as a function of frequency by dragging control points on the frequency response display.

Dialog includes brickwall filters, de-hum and de-buzz processing, broadband noise reduction, de-ploding, de-essing, 10-band equalization, compression, and limiting. Separate presets for each section allow you to get results fast.

The brickwall filters have variable rolloff slopes and can be used to cutoff low or high frequency ranges. The de-hum processor uses notch filters to eliminate 10 harmonics of either 50 Hz or 60 Hz hum. The de-buzz processor squelches nasty line frequency buzzes. The de-noise processor is the stellar sounding MR Noise algorithm with a simplified interface. De-plode and de-ess are custom processors; use de-plode to tame plosive sounds and use de-ess to adjust the amount of sibiliants. The EQ section is the powerful and easy to use TrackPlug equalizer, with 10 bands of equalization, 11 different filter types to choose from, and a variety of presets. The compressor is the TrackPlug Vintage compressor, with presets tailored to voice processing.

Trigger Advanced Drum Replacer

Slate Trigger is an exceptional way to take your drum sounds to the next level without fuss or hassle. With the virtual drum replacement plug-in's phase-accurate engine, extreme detail, natural response, multiple drum layers, and the professional Steven Slate Drum sample library that's included, you'll never have to worry about drums again.

Slate Trigger drum replacer plug-in has a phase-accurate multilayered triggering engine. This means that in one instance of the plug-in, you can seamlessly trigger multiple drum samples simultaneously such as a close mic sample, stereo overhead sample, and a stereo room mic samples. Or, mix many direct mic samples to develop your own custom unique drum sounds. This multichannel triggering functionality allows the user to recreate the sound of natural drums with real multitracked samples. Each sample layer has parameters for customization such as velocity and dynamic control, attack, sustain, release, and independent levels. Other features of the Slate Trigger drum plug-in include 2 detection modes, MIDI in/out, automation of detecting parameters, up to 127 different articulations per instrument, up to 127 velocity layers per instrument and up to 127 alternation hits per velocity layer, and a unique Leakage Suppression function.

Phase Accurate Triggering

Leakage Suppression

The Slate Trigger drum replacer plug-in has the unique functionality to be set in a way that in can automatically be instructed to not trigger certain leakages on a drum track using its Leakage Suppression mode. Using the Leakage Suppression technology you can trigger a drum track with 100% accuracy even if this drum track has many loud bleeds from other drums.

Two Detecting Modes

The Drum Samples

At the heart of any drum library are the actual samples themselves. Steven Slate has been called the master of drum sounds. In the early 2000's his original drum sample disc was in high demand amongst many top Hollywood producers and mixers. By 2006, when he publicly released his first official drum sample disc, his sounds could already be heard in many top billboard hits.

Steven has recorded only the best drums, all tuned to perfection for this virtual instrument and sample collection. Every drum and cymbal has been recorded first to 2-inch tape, enhancing their unique rich sound. Every drum and cymbal was recorded with multiple velocities and multiple hits per velocity to ensure the most natural recreation. Then the samples were transferred to digital via high end A/D converters at 24 bit/44.1kHz.

The drum samples were then processed by Steven Slate using some of the most classic analog gear from both past and present. The result are drums that sound like you've always dreamed of, with punchy transients and smooth decays. Modeled Kits

While you'll probably find many of the drum kits on Steven Slate Drums are reminiscent of drum sets you've heard from various bands over the years, thirteen kits have been authentically modeled for a sound so genuine, it's just like the real acoustic thing! The Signature Drumkits Platinum collection contains drum sets modeled after those from Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Motley Crue, Metallica, Greenday, Deftones, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Pantera, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dream Theater. Keep in mind, these drum kits model the finalized mixed sounds that you have become familiar with, not just raw recordings of the drummer's kits. Room Mics

The Steven Slate Drums collection contains two unique sounding sets of room mics. The first set is from a large warehouse with concrete walls. These room mics were processed with heavy doses of compression, EQ, and even modulation to make a larger-than-life, deep, wide, expressive room sound.

The drums were then sampled in the famous NRG Recording STUDIO A, known for being one of the top drum rooms in Los Angeles. Provides transparent and articulate sound to avoid lifeless, over-compressed mixes. How did the FG-X Virtual Mastering Processor come about? Two years ago, Steven Slate and expert algorithm engineer Fabrice Gabriel started working out the concept for a digital audio process that could increase the level of a mix without altering the punch and dynamic feel, or make the mix sound squashed and lifeless. They started by researching saturation curves and their effect on various types of transient material. After several months of study and hundreds of listening tests, they made some fascinating discoveries. What they found, was that in order to transparently add level to a mix, a dynamic and intelligent transient saturation system would have to be developed.

New advanced algorithms were created to execute the extremely complex communication system that would be needed to properly perform the new dynamic operations. A new algorithm was formed, and the process was named "Intelligent Transient Preservation," or ITP.

ITP The ITP process uses a complex look-ahead detection algorithm to analyze oncoming transients and groups of transients. It then optimizes a specialized set of saturation curves for that specific transient. For example, if the ITP algorithm's look-ahead identifies a kick drum transient, it will optimize the algorithm so that it preserves low frequency energy. For a snare drum transient, it will optimize the algorithm to preserve upper mid-range punch. The result is the some of the most transparent means of level maximization the industry has ever heard, with extreme transparency, and no degrading artifacts common to peak limiters.

Control

The FG LEVEL maximization plug-in offers the user complete control of their mix, before and after the level maximization process.

The TRANSIENT function contains two controls to fine-tune mix transients. Lo Punch allows you to transparently increase the level of the low energy in a mix, increasing the punch and dynamics without altering other elements of the mix. DETAIL adds more clarity and focus to the transients, perfect for buried snares or kicks.

After the ITP-powered GAIN maximizer, there is a function called Dynamic Perception. This amazing new process can make the final master sound more dynamic, open, and punchy, even though the master has much more limited dynamic range then the mix.

ITP Global Control

At the right of the Dynamic Perception control lies the ITP character slider. This control sets the global character of saturation curves that the ITP process will produce. The higher the slider, the more the transients in the mix will sound harder. The lower the slider, the more the transients will sound smoother. This great feature allows you to further customize your master with extreme precision.

True Audio Mastering Quality Compression

Some mastering compressor plug-ins try to emulate vintage analog units and add color, harmonics, and different filters that change the way your mix sounds. In truth, most top mastering engineers use very little or no compression. When they do use compression, they use only the most transparent compressors that will not alter the tone or balance of the mix.

The FG Dynamics plug-in is a true mastering quality compressor meant to control the dynamics of your mix in the most transparent way possible, not to color it with digitally modeled harmonics or distortions. The FG Dynamics compressor assumes that you have used your favorite color or tone compressor to achieve the sound on your final mix. It is the job of the FG Dynamics compressor to maintain that quality, not alter it. The advanced dynamics algorithm is so transparent, you'll wonder if its on.

Quality Tested

In order to fine-tune the FG-X Virtual Mastering Console, Slate Digital has had some of the top mastering engineers in the world help them test out the algorithms to ensure that they work in the finest and most accurate way possible.

The concept behind the FG-X Visual Mastering Processor:

Imagine mastering your mixes without causing the lifeless, squashed, and over-compressed sound that has become so common in modern music. Everyone has been at the mercy of the "loudness wars" for over ten years now. Masters have become louder and louder, at the expense of the music becoming harsh and lacking punch and dynamics. One of the main causes of this epidemic is the use of the Peak Limiter to achieve increased levels in the mastering stage. Peak limiters attenuate transients and often reduce punch, stereo imaging, can greatly alter mix balances, and cause a fatiguing result to the ears.

Some of the top mastering engineers have found ways to combat this sonic degradation by using techniques other then Peak Limiting. One of the more popular techniques is the use of saturation in both the analog and digital domain. Another popular method is clipping the front end of expensive A/D converters.

However, both of these methods, while better then peak limiting, have their downfalls. Static saturation curves are not universal in their ability to sound good on all transients. Clipping greatly reduces low end punch and is very poor at retaining sub bass. Both static saturation and clipping have a small window of gain maximizing before audible distortion. And that's why the FG-X Dynamics Rack was created.

FinalPlug is a professional peak limiter/volume maximizer with extensive bit depth truncation and dither options, making it ideally suited for a final mix. Tame the peaks a bit, or really squeeze all the volume you can out of it.

The FinalPlug interface could hardly be simpler. Select a desired output ceiling level, say -0.1 dB, and then adjust the threshold level. As you decrease the threshold you increase the volume.

The peak limiter section works by looking ahead 1.5 milliseconds. When a input peak is detected that will exceed the desired output ceiling, the gain is quickly ducked to let the peak pass, then the gain is restored relatively slowly according to the release time control. During rapidly changing program material with frequent peaks, a faster release time will achieve better results. During slowly changing material, slower release times prevent excessive modulation distortion. FinalPlug's auto release feature analyzes the input signal to determine peakiness, and selects the optimum release time for the program material.

The truncate/dither section is usually used for CD mastering, where truncation to 16 bits can create audible quantization distortion. By adding special dither noise, the quantization distortion can be eliminated, and the dither noise can be spectrally shaped to move it to frequency ranges where it is less audible. FinalPlug contains a comprehensive noise shaping section which reproduces a variety of commonly used noise shapes.

Why is MasterVerb a great reverb plug-in? 1) It sounds great. The rooms sound natural and spacious. The plates are extremely dense. The decays are silky smooth without annoying artifacts. The reverb is clearly audible without being muddy. When applied to stereo inputs, the stereo soundstage is maintained with proper balance.

2) It can reproduce a range of spaces. MasterVerb contains two different algorithms to generate the dense late reverberation: a hall algorithm and a plate algorithm. Each of these algorithms has independently adjustable size and decay time controls, so they can be morphed across a wide range of characteristics. The hall algorithm is intended for acoustic spaces, e.g. rooms, chambers, studios, halls, while the plate algorithms is for, well, plate reverbs. An early reflection section allows for various early reflection patterns, again with adjustable size. Wet and dry delays allow for pre-delay and other delay effects. Two three-band EQs are provided: the early EQ shapes the overall tonality of the reverb response and the late EQ shapes the frequency dependent decay. On top of that there is a triggered amplitude envelope which can generate gated and reverse reverb effects. So, there is a ton of flexibility here. MasterVerb ships with 60 presets which cover a wide range of reverbs and serve as starting points for further exploration.

3) It's easy to use. The interface allows you to quickly visualize the changes you are making. A reverb time response lets you see the reverb decay, early reflections, amplitude envelope, and delay settings. A 3-D frequency response plot shows the reverb decay as a function of frequency. There are graphical frequency response controls for both EQs.

4) It's CPU efficient. A huge amount of effort went into designing the low level algorithms so they could be fully automatable and also extremely CPU efficient. The result is that MasterVerb takes far less CPU than other reverb plug-ins.

Multiband dynamics processing combines the techniques of equalization and single band dynamics processing. A simple application of multiband dynamics is to apply compression or expansion to a specific frequency range. It is also possible to think of multiband dynamics as applying equalization which is dependent on the level of the input sound. So one can set up an EQ curve for low volumes and set another EQ curve for high volumes.

Another use of multiband dynamics is noise reduction. One can set up multiple bands to do noise gating, by setting the gain to decrease when the signal falls below threshold. Tube Saturator is the world's most accurate real time tube amp plug-in. Unlike other tube simulators, which use radically simplified models, Tube Saturator uses state of the art circuit simulation technology to capture every nuance of an analog circuit. With circuit simulation, the analog schematic (consisting of the individual resistors, capacitors, tubes, and so on) completely defines the signal processing. The schematic is converted into a system of non-linear differential equations which is solved at each sampling period, in realtime. That's mathematical talk for "it sounds exactly like the analog circuit".

The circuit simulation technology is extremely CPU intensive, and hence we are only able to simulate very simple circuits at this time. A fast computer is highly recommended to run the plug-in. Tube Saturator is in fact a basic circuit consisting of a Baxandall type three-band EQ feeding two 12AX7 triode preamp stages. It's similar to preamp stages you'd find in a guitar amp, but it is by no means a complete guitar amplifier model-- that would be way too expensive to simulate even with today's fast CPUs. However, it is extremely accurate, and hence you can get the same distortion and tonal characteristics that you'd expect from a real tube preamp.

Use Tube Saturator to add a bit of analog warmth to recordings, or increase the drive for some distortion. You can use it as a saturating peak limiter too.

Increasing the Drive control increases the (digital) input gain while decreasing the (digital) output gain, so you can easily adjust distortion levels. The FAT switch changes the bias circuit of the first preamp stage to increase gain.

The Samples

At the heart of any virtual drum library are the actual samples themselves. Steven Slate has been called the master of drum sounds. In the early 2000s, his original drum sample disc was in high demand amongst many top Hollywood producers and mixers. By 2006, when he publicly released his first official drum sample disc, his sounds could already be heard in many top billboard hits. Today, the airwaves are filled with Steven's samples, as they are used by top mixers such as Mike Shipley, Chris Lord-Alge, Dave Way, Jeff Juliano, Jay Baumgardner, and more.

Steven has recorded only quality drums, all tuned to perfection. Every drum and cymbal in the Slate Trigger EX sample collection has been recorded first to 2" tape, enhancing their unique, rich sound. Every drum and cymbal was recorded with multiple velocities and multiple hits per velocity to ensure the most natural recreation. Then the samples were transferred to digital via high-end A/D converters at 24-bit/ 44.1khz.

The drum samples were then processed by Steven Slate using some of the most classic analog gear from both past and present. The result are drums that sound like you've always dreamed of, with punchy transients and smooth decays.

SSD Virtual Instrument

The SSD virtual instrument, powered by KONTAKT Player3, is a standalone or RTAS-VST-AU plug-in that is easy to use and integrate into your DAW. It contains both maps for keyboard and a universal mapping for Roland VDrums. With its custom velocity and remapping features, you can also customize your own maps.

New in version 3.5 is the "Advanced AMG" anti-machine gun mode. This algorithm is physically modeled after real drummers playing real drums. Advanced AMG makes the drums play with an extreme amount of realism with detailed response and sensitivity.

Modeled Virtual Drum Sets

While you'll probably find many of the drum kits on Steven Slate Drums are reminiscent of drum kits you've heard from various bands over the years, 13 kits have been authentically modeled for a sound so close, you'll think it is the real thing. The initial EX pack contains the now famous Old Zep kit, modeled after the classic sound of Led Zeppelin. Upgrading with the EX expansions can get you all of the modeled kits, including: Steely Dan, Motley Crue, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dream Theater. Keep in mind, these virtual drum kits model the finalized mixed sounds that you have become familiar with, not just raw recordings of the drummer's kits.

Room Mics

The Steven Slate Drums collection contains two unique sounding sets of room mics. The first set is from a large warehouse with concrete walls. These room mics were processed with heavy doses of compression, EQ, and even modulation to make a larger then life, deep, wide, expressive room sound.

The drums were then sampled in the famous NRG Recording STUDIO A, known for being one of the top drum rooms in Los Angeles. It's been home to bands like Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Billy Joel, and more. These room mics have been left unprocessed and contain the signature depth and space from this beautiful sounding room.

Combining hum removal, buzz removal, brickwall filtering, and spectrum analysis into one easy to use plug-in, MR Hum is the perfect tool to clean up recordings with any sort of hum or nasty buzz.

The hum removal section works by applying a set of notch filters spaced at multiples of the fundamental hum frequency, usually 60 Hz or 50 Hz. You select the fundamental frequency, the number of harmonics you want to eliminate (up to 10), and the width of the notches (the default works fine). There are presets for the usual cases of 60 Hz hum and 50 Hz hum. You can also select any fundamental frequency continuously from 20 to 200 Hz. Sometimes it's necessary to use a slightly different frequency in cases where the hum has been recorded on analog tape and played back on a different machine, which will cause the hum frequency to change.

The high resolution spectrum display makes it easy to see the hum frequency and the number of harmonics that are required. The spectrum display can run before processing, to see the input signal spectrum, or after processing, to see the output signal spectrum. The monitor feature allows you to hear the signal being removed, offering another way to set the parameters.

MR Hum contains a separate processor for buzz. Buzz is a periodic signal with frequency harmonics through the entire audible spectrum, which would require hundreds of notch filters to eliminate. The buzz algorithm uses a different approach which is far more efficient. Often buzz is a nasty case of hum, and hence is at 50 or 60 Hz, but sometime buzz is caused by a motor or some other kind of interference, hence the buzz processor allows any frequency from 20 to 200 Hz.

Finally MR Hum also provides brickwall filters to eliminate low or high frequency interference.

All captured in 96/24 for the most pristine nuance in your recordings. Great pride has been taken to capture the essence of each facility, capturing the heart of the room. Great IRs are captured with both great engineering and finding the heartbeat of the facility. We can all rattle off what most would consider the esteemed gear in vogue, but as so many know, it's the feel and sound of the music that matters and makes for great music.
